Number 11 exclusive guesthouse - Bruges - Flandre-occidentale
Number 11, located on a quiet side street between ancient bridges and meandering canals, it is an oasis of tranquility.
The vibe: 16th century meets modern art
Number 11 blends classic with modern in a warm, personal style that reflects the international travels of the owners. Each room retains elements of the old building and the interior décor - modern paintings and bold colours – adds to the tension between the old and the new. The B&B is called an “arthouse” for a good reason. No surprise – the B&B is run by Annie de Graeve and her husband, Pavel, a Czech artist, whose paintings adorn the walls of the house. An artist's house indeed.
The rooms: airy, bright and comfortable
We stayed in a room at the top of the house under the roof. In most places this would be a cramped, dark attic but in our case it was large airy room with lots of light, high ceilings and a loft-like space with an extra bed (for people with a child). Downstairs there is a sitting room with a fireplace where you can hang out in the evenings, a large kitchen for guests to make coffee, tea or little snacks, and a dining room with a long table for lively communal breakfasts.
The guests: an international crowd
Brugge is a popular tourist destination that attracts people from all over, and on this visit to Number 11, we enjoyed the company of an American travel writer and her son (also a travel writer), and two young couples (from England and France), at breakfast. It’s not surprising that Annie and Pavel get the international crowd in. Annie is originally from Brugge and has traveled around the world with Pavel. They have lived in Honduras, among other places.
The location: best part of Brugge
Number 11 is located on a traffic-free side street in the loveliest part of Brugge that is criss-crossed by canals. You hear no cars, and if the weather is good you can sit in the garden and enjoy the peace and quiet.
The food: put the diet on hold
Number 11 serves breakfast – not just any breakfast, but one that has the large dining table heaving with platters of warm croissants, delicious breads and cakes, cold cuts, cheese, eggs. In other words, put the diet on hold! Everything was delicious, fresh and filling.
But most of all we enjoyed chatting with our neighbours and host, informally gathered around the breakfast table. A true b&b experience.
