The vibe: a weekend at old friends new house

Always trying to make your house the perfect cocoon? Or more thinking about turning your house in an inspiring place to work and live? Look no further! Check in at the Patio Houses for a weekend of inspiration, relaxation, good food and interesting company.

Patio Houses is a wonderfully restored Mechelen townhouse turned into Spa and B&B. It feels like you have the whole place to yourself (there is only one guestroom) they prepare the Spa specially for you and at night they serve you an intimate dinner.

The name – Patio Houses – came about because there are actually two: one that fronts the street (the primary house) and another house across an interior courtyard garden, which the owners use for their home office. Guests hang out in the primary house which seems to run seamlessly into the garden patio and into the adjoining second house. The result: lots of light, air and space.

The owners: architect and lighting expert

It’s no surprise that the house is what it is. Ariane is an architect and Patrick is a lighting/domotica expert. They bought the house and a couple of other buildings in the neighborhood over ten years ago back when few people wanted to live there. Far from being techie freaks, Ariane and Patrick love food and entertaining, travel and of course, architecture. Hence, with their wonderful four course dinners, you get great conversation.

The spa: shed the worries of the world

The wellness spa is located in the basement but it is not your typical B&B or hotel basement spa. This one rocks! There is a hammam (wet sauna), a dry sauna, a jacuzzi and a cold immersion “pool”. The room is lit with candles and mood lighting. Aromatherapy is a strong component of the experience. You can choose from a variety of scents for the jacuzzi and the sauna. The showers are a marvel. There are three options: cold mist, Caribbean rain and Atlantic ocean, each choice with its own scent, lighting and ambiance. It’s easy to lose oneself in the spa. We spent almost three hours forgetting the outside world. You can also arrange for a masseuse (we didn’t take advantage of this option) to come by for a bit more pampering.

The food: fresh, healthy world cuisine

It’s hard not to fall in love with Patio Houses and want to stay there forever. After three hours in the spa, we managed to pull ourselves together for a four-course dinner that was fresh, healthy and very delicious. But it wasn’t just the food that kept us awake till 1:30 in the morning, the conversation flowed like the wine. Ariane and Patrick are fascinating people with enough stories to fill an entire evening.

Just when we thought we couldn’t eat anything else for a week, we woke up the next day to a hearty breakfast, served in the airy dining room with its soaring glass doors opening into the patio.

Pros and Cons

Pros: This is the ultimate getaway for those who want rest and tranquility. The spa and the private dinner setting make it realy special. The house is beautifully designed and restored, with state of the art domotica and furniture. Parking is easy, the neighborhood is quiet and the owners are great hosts.

Cons: The bedroom is an architect's dream but might not appeal to people who love a more rustic style. The location is not super scenic but just outside the city center of the old town of Mechelen (everthing is within walking distance).
