Asinello B&B - Bruges - West-Flanders

cijferBed and breakfast goes boutique hotel. Relax and enjoy!

We found the entrance to Asinello tucked between shops on a busy cobbled street in Bruges. Behind the door is an oasis of calm. The former Mission house for the Carmelite Fathers has been transformed into stylish b&b. A small courtyard leads to the entrance where Monique, the owner, welcomed us warmly. In contrast with their donkey logo (a reference to the location on Ezelstraat - Donkey Street), the decor is sleek and modern. Asinello is more mini boutique hotel than a bed and breakfast. It has just three rooms, each unique in size and layout but sharing the same high standard of decor and luxurious fittings. Breakfast is served downstairs off the lobby where you can relax by the modern open fire, though in summer you can eat in the courtyard next to the fish pond.

We had the entire top floor with high ceilings and huge A-beams, decorated calmingly in shades of grey and white. It all felt very fresh and new. Two leather chairs and a soft blanket provided colour accents that were echoed in the artwork. Monique had understood that our small daughter was accompanying us and had made up the sofa bed (a comfortable second double bed), but as we had stolen a few days away from her, we didn't need it after all. When we came back that evening it had been stowed away again, ready for us to enjoy the flatscreen tv and dvd player. But this unasked for service gave us an insight into Monique's attention to detail.

Our room was kitted out to the highest specifications. A magnetic key opened both the door from the street and our door, and served as the master key for the light switches. At the touch of a button shades descended over the four large skylights. Our bathroom had a huge rainshower (the biggest we'd ever come across) and a jacuzzi bath. Smooth stone tiles gave it a luxurious feel, yet it was cosy, tucked under the eaves. The Auping bed was so comfortable we could barely drag ourselves into the centre of town, just a short walk away. We asked Monique if she had any dvds as we felt like watching a film. When we came back a good selection was already waiting for us in our room. Thoughtful details such as bottles of water next to the bed and bathrobes added to our sense of ease at Asinello.

The following morning over breakfast, we learned how Asinello came to be. Monique, a former GP and her husband Peter, who owned a tennis club, decided on a total change in their busy lives. Having regularly visited another hotel in Belgium where they could really get away from it all, they decided to create a similar haven in Bruges. This restful urban retreat is a testament to their success. There is even a hammam, for ultimate relaxation, which we unfortunately didn't have time to use. After breakfast - an extensive spread of pastries, breads, fresh fruit salad and perfectly cooked boiled eggs, we reluctantly set off for home.

Asinello is a perfect spot for those who like the luxury of a boutique hotel combined with the personal touch of a bed and breakfast.

Always on the lookout for nice addresses

We search the internet, ask around and also get lots of tips from users of our site. We base our initial selection on the info we find on the websites of the hotels.

The nicest addresses we visit personally. Addresses we get complaints about are re-evaluated and removed if needed. Keep us informed!

Have a nice stay!
